Primary school Starše is situated in municipality Starše. It is a rural area between two bigger towns, Ptuj and Maribor. Eight villages are included in the municipality and about 4100 people live here. Our pupils are aged 6 to 14 years. This year there are 254 at the central school and 62 at the branch school. Part of the institution are also two kindergartens for children aged 11 months to 5 years. School has 75 employees, around 50 of them are teachers.

Our staff works hard to integrate all of pupils in our school life as equally as possible. To support progress of all of our pupils we are introducing innovative teaching approaches.

Being located in a rural environment, cultural institutions are not on site and are not easily accessible to the pupils. There are some cultural activities present in the municipality in the form of choir, folklore, drama and tamburica group. Mostly, members are adults.

Children get in touch with art and/or practice art mostly at school or at extracurricular afternoon activities. However, these are not accessible to all of the pupils due to costs involved and transportation to nearest town required.

Our school offers various cultural activities to our pupils: culture days, theatre or opera visits, we cooperate with cultural societies in our vicinity. We have three active choirs, a folklore, art, puppet, drama, tamburica and instrumental group. These activities appeal to our pupils and are well attended. However, teachers report that pupils at the risk of social exclusion are less likely to take part.
Most of our pupils learn English since kindergarten and German since 2nd grade. Through the exchanges they will be able to actively practice at least one of the languages.
